What’s really on your plate? Missouri tries to halt lab-grown meat

MISSOURI — Do you really know what is in your food? That question is at the center of a growing debate in Missouri, where state lawmakers are moving to block future sales of lab-grown meat before it ever hits store shelves.

At least three bills have been introduced, all aiming to ban the sale or distribution of meat products grown using animal cells. Supporters of the measures argue that the state must act now to protect consumers, pointing to what they describe as unanswered health questions surrounding bioengineered foods.

Additional lawmakers worry that the long-term impacts of lab-cultivated proteins haven’t been sufficiently studied and caution that Missouri shouldn’t become a testing ground for an emerging industry.
