Searcy County Election Commissioners Decertified by State

The Arkansas State Board of Election Commissioners decertify three members of a county election commission.

Reports from the Arkansas Advocate and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette said the decision was made last week for the decertification of members of the Searcy County Election Board after the state discovered that the board had leased equipment to video stream the count from a non-profit organization for $100. The state board claimed that the proper paperwork did not exist for the purchase and that the low cost lead to concerns that the equipment may have been donated by the organization, a violation of state law.

In several interviews, the members of the commission deny any wrongdoing claiming they were simply trying to save the county money in using the equipment. The members add that although they do have the right to a hearing to appeal the decision, they probably would not take that option feeling they would not overturn their decision plus any further appeal would be at their own cost.

The decertification means that the members would not be allowed to serve as Election Officials for 14 years.
