Police Chief Discusses Sunset Clause Removal for Existing Tax

Police Chief Chris Graddy is speaking out about a proposal to remove a sunset clause from a tax that is already in place, saying the clause creates challenges for long-term city services.

Graddy addressed the issue during an episode of KHOZ's "Around The Table." Graddy said sunset clauses are not beneficial for services that operate continuously, such as police, fire protection, and infrastructure.

According to Graddy, those services require stable and predictable funding. He said earlier administrations may have believed a sunset clause was necessary when the tax was first approved.

The current sunset clause requires voters to revisit the tax every eight years. Another vote to continue the tax is coming up soon. Graddy said the hope is to move forward without the clause in place.

He emphasized that the proposal does not introduce a new tax. Instead, it would allow an existing tax to continue without repeated renewal votes, helping city leaders plan more effectively.
