John Gripka from North Arkansas College talked about the Supreme Court on Friday.
Gripka is a social sciences associate professor at North Arkansas College. He said during KHOZ's Friday broadcast of "Around The Table" that he likes to use the analogy of a referee when explaining the Supreme Court.
"And the rulebook that the referees are using is the primarily Constitution itself," Gripka said. He said when opposing sides are present, disagreements over the meaning of the "rulebook" and its application is where the Supreme Court serves.
"They serve to resolve disputes within our system of government, especially disputes that are about the Constitution, civil rights, civil liberties, and disputes between the branches of government themselves," he said. The professor noted a current position the nation is in.
"I think we're just in a position now where there are so many disputes. The opposing sides are in a lot of ways so evenly matched that they're appealing to the Supreme Court, or they're to these referees more and more to make these decisions and make these ultimate calls," Gripka said. He also discussed state power.
The professor said all the current ruling on abortion essentially did was return abortion to state legislatures. He said this is where it was before Roe v. Wade. Later, he talked about history and more.
