Mike Nabors: Downtown Progress Moving Along

Mike Nabors of he Historic Harrison Business Association stops by KHOZ's "Around the Table" to talk about the many projects currently happening around downtown.

Nabors discussed how the association came out of the original Main Street Harrison program with the mission to promote the businesses and coordinate special events. Nabors said momentum for the current revitalization began with the request he got from Mayor Jerry Jackson to help facilitate meetings with downtown business owners while at the same time, the Northwest Arkansas Development District got a grant to help develop a five-year-strategic plan for revitalization of both Harrison and Mountain Home.

Nabors said two things came out of the surveys that were conducted during that time. The first was that the majority of the respondents felt the downtown was still the heart of the community and were hoping to see activities return to the square. The second thing mentioned was they would loke to see more restaurant and retail choices downtown.

Retail Strategies put together a Strategic Plan by the end of 2024 and Nabors said parts of the plan have already been implemented, including the formation of a Historic District Commission to help with the rehabilitation of historic buildings. Nabors said information recently presented on Historic Tax Credits was also very helpful.

Nabors said the recent return of Main Street Status to downtown as well as the surge of projects on the east side of the square have continued the momentum Downtown Harrison.
