Author Talks About her Book That Tells her Real-Life Workplace Survival Story

Targeted Innocent: Survivor in an Impossible Hostile Work Environment is a personal story of the author but with a creative flourish.

The author, Donna Baxter, spoke about her work on KHOZ's "Around The Table" on Thursday. She wrote the book in third person. It was penned after the events it describes, but the author said the true story includes some fiction at the suggestion of her editor. The fictional portions are those that pull readers into the story and bring a conclusion to the story itself.

The book follows her journey during which she at a federal job at a medical center. She had an office job in the education department for 13 years. She said she administered to inmates who would come there for school. Baxter loved the job, but things shifted when she got a new boss.

The author admitted that he was "one of the worst people I've ever met in my whole life." However, she said she hates to say that because he has since died.

At the same time, she recalled rude and manipulative treatment on the part of her boss. One incident Baxter described was that her boss said if she wanted a good evaluation she needed to "make him happy." She said that happened within 30 minutes of meeting him.

Baxter added that the union learned that this person had a history of such behavior. She worked for a newspaper prior to turning to book writing.

Even as a child, she crafted stories. But her father encouraged her to find a job that would provide her with a pension.

Ironically, it was her real-life experience on the job that gave her a push into book writing. Her work is available online. More was discussed on the broadcast.

The full interview with Baxter is on the "Around The Table" Facebook Page.
