Area Woman Has Identity Stolen by a Woman Incarcerated in Washington State

A Boone County woman has her identity stolen which wrongly connected her to several criminal cases.

A Washington state woman is facing charges following an alleged misuse of a Harrison woman’s identity. Forty-six-year-old Melissa Shelby Mattingly is facing charges of non-financial identity fraud.

According to the probable cause affidavit, on June 24, 2022, the Boone County Deputy Sheriff’s Office received a complaint from a Harrison woman after she was contacted by the Social Security Office alerting her of an “incarceration alert” showing she was incarcerated in the Grant County Washington Jail.

The victim called the jail and was informed there were five open criminal cases regarding her identity and her identity was being used by Mattingly. After calling the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, she was redirected to the Moses Lake City Police Department, who provided the Boone County Sheriff’s Office with five reports of criminal cases involving the victim’s misused identity. The cases included two counts of bank robbery, one count of automobile theft and one count of felony theft.

Mattingly allegedly used the victim’s identity in all instances causing the Moses Lake City Police Department to obtain an arrest warrant for the victim. During investigations, the Moses Lake Police Department were able to identify Mattingly as the suspect and cancel the arrest warrant for the victim. Mattingly also reportedly used the victim’s identity to title and register a vehicle.

Mattingly is facing a felony count of non-financial identity fraud. Her bond is set at $25,000.
