Mary Lou Phelps, passed away Friday, July 4, 2025.

Mary Lou Phelps of Springfield, Missouri passed away Friday, July 4, 2025 in Springfield Rehabilitation and HealthCare Center in Springfield, Missouri. 

She was born September 21, 1937 in Clarion, Iowa the daughter of Arthur and Mary (Baker) Morrow. In 1966 she married James Hugh Phelps, who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were her parents and brothers, Robert and Victor. Surviving are one sister-in-law, Paula Morrow of Princeton, Illinois and six nieces and nephews in different states. Mary Lou grew up on a family farm outside of Clarion and was especially fond of chickens all her life.

After moving to a home north of Springfield, her husband built a large henhouse to support her hobby. There she raised many varieties of show chickens, which had free range of their large property. He also modified her pickup truck to hold comfortable carriers, and Mary Lou traveled widely to exhibit her chickens at shows in several states. She was always proud of her prize-winning “girls.” 

Cremation arrangements were under direction of Walnut Lawn Funeral Home in Springfield. Interment will be in her family’s plot in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cassville, Missouri, under direction of Fohn Funeral Home in Cassville.
