SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — As summer continues, it is important to warn of the risks involved with leaving your car parked and unventilated in the hot sun.
Cars can heat up quickly in warmer temperatures, with the inside rising nearly 20 degrees higher within the first 10 minutes.
According to the Springfield-Greene County Office of Emergency Management, leaving children, elderly people or pets inside an unventilated car for more than 20 to 30 minutes can be life threatening, and are considered felony offenses.
Some objects that can should avoid long periods of heat are plastic bottles and batteries. Leaving plastic water bottles in the car can melt microplastics into the water, which can be dangerous to consume. Batteries can overheat, which causes them to lose sustainability and reduce lifespan.
