National Food Group Pays Off Meal Debt for Local School District

NOVI, MI, April 29, 2024—National Food Group, a leading food distributor for K-12 schools nationwide, announced today that Bergman School District will receive grant funding to pay off its school lunch debt totaling $6324.99. The school will also receive a $5,000 credit toward purchasing Zee Zees® products for its cafeterias.

With 1,116 students enrolled in the school district’s Pre-K through 12 curriculum, sixty-two percent are eligible for the National School Lunch Program’s (NSLP) free or reduced-price lunch plan. This community has been hit hard financially over the last few years, and this donation will help pave the way for a more secure future.

When asked how important this funding is to the community and the school district, Superintendent Sarah Alexander remarked, "I know that these are difficult financial times for many families, and we are so appreciative of the opportunity to help some of them pay off their debt. Thank you very much for doing that."

The Grab The Tab school lunch debt relief program was launched in 2023 to help schools with overdue meal balances. This year, applications from 34 states totaled nearly $1.6 million.

“Every single application caught our attention and displayed such a great need across the country,” shared Samantha Bourque, Corporate Social Responsibility Director for National Food Group. “Many students rely on schools as their primary source for meals, and we applaud the cafeteria heroes who are trying to balance their budgets with students’ needs every day. While we are encouraged by the direction many states are headed in providing free meals to students, we are thrilled to ‘Grab The Tab’ for Bergman School District.”

Grab The Tab is a program of Project SERVE, National Food Group’s corporate social responsibility platform initiative. A team from National Food Group will be on-site at the elementary school at 1:30 p.m. on April 29.
