Missouri Looks at Income Tax Elimination

The Missouri House Commerce Committee heard a set of bills today that would put income tax on the ballot.

Speaker Jon Patterson’s bill proposes a constitutional amendment that would allow the legislature to stop taxing wages. If passed, the measure would go on the ballot in November. Supporters say it would give Missourians more autonomy over their money. But minority floor leader Ashley Aune questions how the legislature would implement the new structure.  

Aune said, “Well I can’t imagine what our tax structure looks like when we slash income tax, slash property taxes and can’t pay for anything anymore. But that’s a conversation for apparently a future legislature that we trust more than we trust ourselves.”  

If approved, the legislature would have three years to remove the income tax, which brings in more than nine billion dollars a year for the state.
