Today is the second federal holiday of the year in honor of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
First observed in 1986, the day honors Dr. King who advocated racial equality and non-violent protests before being assassinated in 1968.
The federal holiday means most government offices will be closed as well as financial institutions. In addition, regular mail service will not take place today.
