International Overdose Awareness Day is on Aug. 31, and a local organization is pushing for awareness.
Kyle Evatt from The North Arkansas Partnership for Health Education (NAPHE) appeared on KHOZ's "Around The Table" to discuss the day. It's a day when people gather to raise awareness of the tragic problem and remember people who died as a result of it.
Evatt highlighted some data. In 2023, Arkansas had 510 confirmed deaths caused by overdose. He said this is a decrease from 2022 which saw 591 such deaths.
Most of these deaths aren't from illegal drugs but from prescriptions. Evatt emphasized fentanyl.
Meanwhile, he said the nation saw an upward trend in cocaine and meth-related drugs. Thankfully, Harrison didn't experience that uptick.
Evatt encouraged people to join NAPHE at Signature Tower at 12 p.m. in suite 104 on Aug. 28. The Harrison mayor and Boone County judge will sign a proclamation. More was discussed on the broadcast.
The full interview with Evatt is on the "Around The Table" Facebook Page.
