Harrison City Leaders Discuss Failure of Tax Renewal

The recent failure of the proposal to renew and remove a Sunset Clause off of a Harrison City Sales Tax was discussed at Thursday night's Harrison City Council Meeting.

After the end of business on the agenda, Councilman Wayne Cone, presiding over the meeting filling in for Mayor Jerry Jackson, asked for Council Reports which Council Member Reed Petty started by asking about the impact of the ending of the Sales Tax, which over 60% was dedicated to the Fire and Police Departments. City Financial Officer Luke Feighert answered that each department will be checking on their budgets and said personnel would more and likely have to be cut when the tax expires at the end of the year.

Council Member Mitch Magness, echoing comments he made during a recent interview on KHOZ's "Around the Table" program, said that the voter is never wrong but they did not do a good job of communicating how city services would be impacted by the tax expiring.

Council Member Josh Earl challenged some of the narratives being presented on social media and within the city discussing the number positions being eliminated. He said though he supported the tax, the vagueness of the implications of the loss of revenue is one of issues the city needs to address.

The department heads will be looking at the numbers and present some information at the next council meeting, which board members are also expected to begin discussions on whether to go back to voters for passage of the tax in November.

The other sales tax, devoted to City Infrastructure, did pass and will be in place permanently.

The full meeting can be found on the City of Harrison Facebook Page.
