A group is looking to restore one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Lakes Region.
The Y-Bridge, built in 1926 and dedicated in 1927, ushered traffic across the James River into Galena for nearly 60 years before being replaced by a new, modern bridge in the mid 1980s. The bridge name was based on its design as it guided vehicles from two different directions with two entry points on the east side merging into one in the middle of the bridge before finishing its span across the river into Galena.
The bridge, which remains open to foot traffic, is in need of renovation. Galena Mayor Fred Barela, during an recent interview on KRZK's "Ozarks Now" program, said the city is helping to spearhead the process with the help of volunteers. Barela says the first goal is to raise $10,000 to pay for the Engineering Designs required for restoration then continue the efforts from there.
