A bill sponsored by two area state legislators and passed without any no votes was among the bills vetoed Friday by Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
District 23 Senator Scott Flippo of Bull Shoals was the lead sponsor of Senate Bill 509 to raise the stipend for members of the Arkansas Board of Corrections from $85 to $110, and District 4 Representative Jack Fortner of Yellville was the primary sponsor.
When announcing her veto, Gov. Huckabee Sanders said the bill had an increase she couldn’t justify to Arkansas taxpayers. In her press release, she stated, “As Governor, I made a commitment to the State of Arkansas that I would look for ways to reduce government waste and ensure that tax dollars are spent wisely. Elected officials have a responsibility to eliminate unnecessary spending at every level of state government.”
