Brown Trout Monitored on White River Below Bull Shoals Dam

A program is underway to monitor Brown Trout.

The full release below is from the Fisheries Division of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission:

Last month, the Trout Management Program and University of Arkansas Pine Bluff launched an investigation into the large-scale movements of Brown Trout on the White River below Bull Shoals Dam (Bull Shoals Tailwater). University personnel surgically implanted 100 Brown Trout with radio-transmitters and will track their movements over the next year.

We tagged all Brown Trout between Bull Shoals Dam and the Buffalo River. The results will aid us in evaluating when and how far Brown Trout move within the White River, and whether the fish move into any of the major tributaries (e.g., Buffalo River, Crooked Creek, Norfork Tailwater). Movement data will ultimately provide us with data to evaluate the current regulations for Brown Trout and their use of catch-and-release areas. An added bonus of this project is that we will be able to evaluate whether Brown Trout move in response to environmental factors, including changes in temperature and flow.

If you catch a tagged fish and plan to release it, please do not attempt to remove the tag.  However, if you choose to legally harvest a tagged Brown Trout, please let us know so we can document when and where you caught the fish.  We look forward to providing updates about this project as it progresses. Feel free to let us know if you have any questions.
